Irma Eicher: reflections from 6 months in PR

  • Irma Eicher
  • October 1, 2025

In 2023, I graduated in History and Politics of the Americas from University College London (UCL), which included an incredible year spent abroad at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Like many of my peers back then, I didn’t have a fixed career plan in mind, but I did know two things early on – science wasn’t for me, and I enjoyed writing and learning new things. Both turned out to be a great foundation for the path I’m on now!

I started out at a tech start-up working to reduce the carbon footprint of AI and other energy-intensive technologies. It was there that I discovered marketing, built new skills, and found an industry that really sparked my curiosity – ultimately leading me to meet the ThoughtSpark team.

The recruitment process was genuinely a positive experience. The team was communicative throughout – up until the very last minute when they delivered the good news. And even the assessments that are usually daunting (as I’m sure most fellow grads would agree with) felt more like an immersion into the work rather than a test. These really were the ideal way to learn about the business, prepare for the final interview, and figure out whether the role was right for me (and spoiler… I think it was).

Looking back on my first few months as an account executive, what stands out most is the culture. Everyone has been welcoming and supportive from the very first day – especially our client services director, Sarah, who’s always happy to answer questions (even the ones I hesitate to ask) and keeps spirits high with baklava and other sweet treats! There’s also a strong focus on work–life balance, from Friday afternoons off in August to Summer and Christmas get-togethers for us to unwind and enjoy a lovely time outside of work.

Finally, I’d say the work itself is incredibly rewarding. It’s motivating to see the impact of our efforts first-hand – whether it’s hearing from clients that an article or case study helped their sales conversations, or simply spotting a piece I worked on published in the media. It’s been a great learning journey so far.

On top of that, I’ve had opportunities I didn’t expect this early on – like attending the UK’s only conference focused on LinkedIn within my first three months. The agency is also supporting my ambitions to learn Spanish, as part of its global outlook.  I look forward to seeing what next year brings!
